There are many different types of materials that are considered to be hazardous solid waste, these materials must be screened from municipal inert landfills. The different types of hazardous waste would include:
· Ignitable - solvents, paint and paint thinner, petroleum products, adhesives , roofing cement
· Corrosive - concrete cleaner, paint stripper, bleach
· Reactive - carbides, sodium hydrosulfate
· Toxic - benzene, lead, mercury
· Listed - chlorinated solvents, Xylol
Other problem wastes include:
· Oils, greases, and machine fluids
· Paints, solvents, ect.
· Batteries
· Fluorescent light bulbs
· Mercury containing devices
· Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)
· Refrigerants/CFCs/HCFCs
Hazardous waste spills are inspected and monitored following a spill, during the remediation and clean-up of the site, and thereafter as deemed necessary. Landfills are inspected for local and state regulations. The First District Health Unit is usually only involved in approving burn variances in regards to permitted landfill regulations and monitoring. Due to federal RCRA standards, the North Dakota Department of Health division of Waste Management oversees and regulates all permitted landfills for the proper disposal of hazardous and solid waste.
