Avian influenza H5N1 has been found in wild birds and domestic poultry flocks in North Dakota. All bird owners, whether commercial producers or backyard enthusiasts, should continue to practice good biosecurity, prevent contact between their birds and wild birds, and immediately report sick birds or unusual bird deaths to State/Federal officials, either through the state veterinarian at 701-328-2655 or your private veterinarian. More information on protecting your flock can be found on the ND Department of Agriculture's avian influenza page.
This strain rarely affects humans. If you must handle sick or dead birds, use appropriate protective gear. If you'd like more information, visit www.cdc.gov/flu/avianflu.
