The First District Health Unit (FDHU) Environmental Health Division is in charge of licensing, regulating and inspecting all food and beverage establishments in the FDHU region. The FDHU requirements for food and beverage establishments are the set of regulations that all food and beverage establishments have to follow. These regulations are based on the 2005 FDA Model Food Code.
On February 15, 2007 the Board of Health adopted the 2007 edition of the First District Health Unit Requirements for Food and Beverage Establishments (Food Code). This code is effective March 1, 2007. Click on the link below to view or download the FDHU Food Code. Also below is a link to the changes that were made to the food code.
All establishments are licensed on an annual basis. License costs are set according to the FDHU fee schedule. Licenses are valid for one calendar year. Click on the links below to view and download the fee schedule. Contact FDHU for an establishment license application .
All food and beverage establishments are inspected at least once yearly and more often if necessary.
Education & Training
Food employees at all licensed establishments are required to attend food education training. The training is provided free of charge and includes information on topics like foodborne illness, hand washing, food preparation and pest issues. The food employees must pass an exam to receive a card. The card is good for three years, and all food employees must have a card to work in a licensed establishment. This is the 3rd year of the food training course so those who attended the training in 2007 will need to recertify in 2010. Please check the dates on your certification card.
